Baggage charges by ‘Long Haul’ Airlines. It may come as no surprise to many passengers that if you fly long haul the airline you now pick has in the last year started charging you for hold luggage (luggage you check-in at the airport). This is because these airlines including your legacy carriers like British Airways, Air France and Iberia to name a few have to keep up with the low-cost airlines which are taking a large share of the airline market.

The ‘Low-cost’ airlines business models work by offering a basic fare and everything else that you need is an extra charge. They charge for choosing your seat, booking hold luggage, and charge for purchasing onboard food.

So Is This Good Or Bad?

Well depending on how you look at it I guess it depends. British Airways mentioned in a newspaper article in April 2018 that:

“customers travel needs vary from trip to trip” and that “someone travelling for a short meeting or leisure break who isn’t planning to check in a bag will appreciate the option to secure a lower fare”.

However, 18 months later are these people saving or has the cost now been pushed up slowly, making us all pay more in the long run?

If you can travel hang luggage only. British airlines do currently offer a very nice 23kgs of hand luggage in a ‘cabin bag’ (most airlines it’s only 8-10kg). If you don’t care where or who you sit with, why would you not book the cheapest fare on display? However, if you will need a bag and let’s face it most of my gay readership will agree we need the liquid allowance at least as well as more than the standard 8-10kgs you are going to need to add hold baggage. Read “Booking Flights: – Is it getting harder again – The hidden Baggage fees”. It explains how sometimes the cheapest airline is not always the cheapest if adding on extras like baggage.

Baggage Charges

I have done a little bit of research and below is a list of current baggage charges some airlines charge for checked-in luggage. More will be added as we go on and this will be updated every 6 months. Remember this is for LONG HAUL FLIGHTS with the Economy basic fares. Short-haul flights may vary! Some prices are in GBP (£) and some in EUR (€).

Europe

With all flights from Europe remember you can only take 100ml containers of liquid in your hand luggage and it must all fit in a sealable approved clear plastic bag. (The bag holds 1L of liquids) so the maximum you’re allowed is 10 containers of 100ml making up the total 1-litre limit.

Extras All Add Up

As you can see, all of these extras soon add up. Gone have the days when on a long haul flight your baggage was included. It’s now so much harder to see what airline will be cheapest overall, with them all having different baggage charges and baggage sizes. Sometimes the airline with the cheapest base fare will not be your cheapest flight overall, and we have not even talked about other extras like pre-booking seats and airport services. Read my other blog post on “Booking Flights: – Is it getting harder again – The hidden Baggage fees” it talks through my experience of trying to get the best flights from the UK to New York City with these baggage fees.
